New Hellraiser Game in Development: Single-Player Horror Confirmed?

Hellraiser

Hellraiser fans finally have something new to look forward to, as the franchise is getting its first-ever mainstream video game adaptation after more than three decades. So what is this game really about? Let’s find out.

What is Hellraiser?

Hellraiser is an '80s horror movie franchise created by Clive Barker.

You might’ve seen its horrifying cast of characters thanks to popular horror games like Dead by Daylight. Pinhead, the franchise’s central figure, is often the centerpiece of these conversations. His head is literally covered with pins, and he’s been a signature character ever since.

To put it simply, Hellraiser is a twisted series rooted in body horror. It follows a group of “Angels” from hell who render judgment on humans guilty of grave sins. The terror usually begins when someone opens the mysterious Lament Configuration, a small puzzle box capable of summoning these “Angels,” like Pinhead, into our world.

But enough of the history lesson. The fact that we’re finally getting a video game adaptation of one of the most iconic horror series is already a great start.

The Hellraiser Game

We don’t know much about the game just yet, but it’s being developed by Saber Interactive, the studio known for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, Evil Dead: The Game and World War Z.

Saber recently posted a 30-second teaser featuring eerie static, Cenobite voices, and other haunting sounds.

Doug Bradley, the iconic actor behind Pinhead, appears to be involved, as his familiar voice can be heard in the teaser. Fans also picked up on the Chatterer’s signature teeth clicks and the sound of chains rattling in the background. These audio elements may be pulled from the original Hellraiser film, especially considering the teaser shows the number “55” on a website, possibly referencing the same location from the first movie.

Saber Interactive is set to reveal more details on July 22.

It’s Not an Asymmetrical Horror Game?

When the news first broke, fans feared it might turn out to be another asymmetrical horror game like Dead by Daylight or Friday the 13th. Many players feel fatigued by that genre and don’t want the Hellraiser experience to be reduced to just another multiplayer formula.

Thankfully, rumors suggest this will be a horror game with a single-player campaign and a story-driven approach, rather than a multiplayer experience. However, none of this is officially confirmed just yet, we’ll have to wait for next week’s announcement.

For now, we’ll have to be patient. But the fact that Hellraiser is finally entering the mainstream gaming scene is an exciting new chapter for the franchise’s return.
