New Final Fantasy Dissidia is a Mobile Game, and Fans Are Already Disappointed

Square Enix announced that there’s going to be a whole new Dissidia fighting game coming, but it’s a mobile game for iOS and Android.

This has caused widespread community uproar after fans were left confused as to why Square Enix keeps pushing the mobile market when Dissidia has always thrived on consoles like the PlayStation Portable.

Fans were disappointed to see that Square Enix continues to tarnish the Dissidia brand after the lukewarm reception of Dissidia NT, which was far from what fans wanted because of its unnecessary revision of its combat as well as its limited Arcade run, alienating fans who craved for another Dissidia experience.

Memes from fans calling out the Dissidia mobile game.

This upcoming Dissidia mobile game has no details available yet apart from silhouette teasers of what Final Fantasy characters to expect. We can make out what looks like Cloud’s signature spiky hair, Auron’s sleeve, Lightning and potentially Tifa Lockhart as well.

While the roster will be interesting, there are red flags all over the place since it’s coming out to iOS and Android, a known haven for egregious microtransactions and gacha elements. To put a Dissidia game, where multiple fan-favorite Final Fantasy characters are around, might be the lottery ticket Square Enix is aiming for. Oddly enough, the announcement website labeled this Dissidia game as a “Team Boss Battle Arena” which is far from what the core gameplay of the original was.

Fans are already worried that this is going to be another "Dissidia Opera Omnia" situation that will get shut down if sales aren’t promising. Other mobile Square titles that suffered that same fate was the cancelled Kingdom Hearts Pokemon GO-like game and their take on a PUBG-like Battle Royale called The First Soldier. Now, it’s weird that Square Enix wants to keep pushing another mobile game.

Dissidia: Final Fantasy has been one of the biggest crossover events in Final Fantasy history, selling over 1.8 million copies in its lifetime. It saw collaborations for all numbered entries from The Warrior of Light in the first Final Fantasy up to Final Fantasy 15 with Noctis duking out in cinematic anime-like battles. The PlayStation Portable versions remain the standout titles of the series, with Duodecim being its improved sequel.

The game went on a long hiatus and it was only until Dissidia NT that Square decided to rekindle the fires of this once popular “fighting” game.

While “fighting game” seems like a tad bit too much for a game like Dissidia, it’s often considered by the community as a brawler similar to what Nintendo does with its Super Smash Bros franchise. It’s always up to debate, but anybody can call it whatever they like.

The Dissidia series has been in limbo for almost a decade now, yet Square Enix hasn’t learned any lessons on what truly makes Dissidia great after all these years. It’s meant to be a celebration of Final Fantasy built for the fans where their favorite characters battle it out in cinematic one versus one battles. It doesn’t need any microtransactions, no gacha traps and mobile versions.

Let’s hope that our worries are unfounded as Square Enix have yet to reveal more information about the game this October 14. You can tune in to the event on their official website here.
