Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is wonderful on PS5 and PC, but Steam Deck owners have been waiting for the game to get patched properly on their handheld. Despite being “verified” by Steam a few times, fans were often disappointed to see stuttering cutscenes and sub-par performance. While fans know not to trust the “verified” rating, a new update might change minds.
According to Gaming on Linux, the latest patch for Insomniac’s open-world superhero game has plenty of updates focused primarily on Steam Deck. Not only are there specific optimizations to make it work on Deck, but the handheld now has a default graphics preset to make things run better. Hopefully, this means that fans will be able to get through that Sandman cold open without any stutters.
Here are the patch notes for the latest Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Steam Deck update:
- Various performance optimizations related to Steam Deck.
- Updated the default preset for Steam Deck to improve performance.
- Performance optimizations for Venom and Symbiotes sections when Level of Detail is set to Medium or lower.
- Updated DirectStorage to version 1.2.4.
- Fixed a bug that prevented players from selecting certain items from the Legend menu on the map when using a mouse.
- Various stability improvements.
Plenty of fans had given up hope on this superhero game ever working on Steam Deck, with some opting to wait for a successor or get a stronger PC handheld. Somehow, the folks at Nixxes are still working on this game to make it more playable on Valve’s crusty piece of hardware. It might be showing its age, but support like this is always appreciated.
Don’t expect to play Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 over 30 FPS on Steam Deck, but this is a solid enough update. Considering how well the first game performed on Deck, fans were hoping the second would do just as well. Sadly, they both come from different console generations, but all this tinkering may have finally made the sequel playable on Valve’s system.
In the end, fans will have to pick up their Steam Deck and play Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for themselves to see if it lives up to expectations.
