As I rolled through the credits of Hollow Knight: Silksong, a wave of realization hit me: we finally have our next protagonist for the eventual third entry of the series.

But before we begin, keep in mind that there are major spoilers for Hollow Knight: Silksong’s story here, so you’ve been warned.

Something to "Tie" the Story Together

Lace.

As the credits rolled after finishing Act 3 of Silksong, we see Hornet finally save Lace from the nightmare she created for herself. It’s a touching moment, one that highlights the growth of Silksong’s protagonists.

Lace is one of the most compelling characters in Silksong’s story. Throughout our adventure in Pharloom, she remains a thorn in our side, much like Hornet was once a foil to The Knight’s journey in the original game. Now, Lace takes center stage as the primary antagonistic force, and she is by far one of Team Cherry’s most well-designed characters since Hornet.

What excites me most is how Team Cherry sets up Lace as a major plot thread (pun intended) for the series’ future. She is essentially made of silk, a twisted version of life given form. She believes she isn’t real, but Hornet assures her that she is alive and that she has a heart. Their relationship throughout the game carried much of my investment in Pharloom, and their showdown in a field of white flowers is one of my favorite gaming moments ever. It’s absolute cinema.

Absolute cinema.

I see this as a genius move from Team Cherry, directly laying the groundwork for what’s to come. It’s similar to the original Hollow Knight, where Hornet made a standout impression despite limited screentime. Now, with Lace quickly becoming a fan favorite and with arguably the best theme in the game, the stage is set for something bigger. Whether it takes the form of a standalone DLC or a third entry, it feels inevitable.

How Team Cherry Is Already Setting the Motions

An end and a beginning.

Another highlight of Lace’s character is how she already has a fleshed-out moveset, similar to how Hornet did in the original game with her “Shaws!” and “Adinos!” She uses a standard dash attack, a parry, catchy gibberish one-liners, and an overpowered move that’s ripped out of Vergil’s Judgment Cut from Devil May Cry. It’s clear that Team Cherry had long-term plans for her character from the moment we first encountered her.

Lace is a formidable force, and having players step into her shoes after the events of Silksong would be a welcome direction. While there is still no confirmation of a third entry, we know that a DLC is currently in development, as revealed in Jason Schreier’s interview with Team Cherry.

Still, I firmly believe that when the next Hollow Knight arrives, Lace will take the spotlight as its primary protagonist. And while it isn’t explicitly stated by Team Cherry as of yet, it is a genius setup for the future.
