It looks like the next God of War game will go back to its Greek roots. Not only that, it'll ditch the current over-the-shoulder action perspective moving to a 2.5D Metroidvania style of gameplay that could see the light of day in 2026, if reports are accurate.
Following the highly acclaimed God of War: Ragnarok in 2022, the sequel to Santa Monica Studio's reimagination of the God of War franchise, which pitted a veteran Kratos against Norse Gods, it looks like the next installment might swing for the fences in terms of style while opting for a more familiar setting.
According to Tom Henderson, the next adventure in the franchise will be a prequel that will take Kratos and players back to the early years of the God-slayer. It'll allegedly be focused on Kratos' relationship with his father, Zeus, and will feature a 2.5 Metroidvania gameplay that will borrow heavily from games like the Blasphemous franchise.
It's important to note that this project is scheduled for release in 2026 according to another reliable source: Jeff Grubb. Earlier this year, there were suggestions that the new God of War would be released in 2025; however, it appears that the game has been internally delayed. Sony Santa Monica has not yet publicly confirmed that the project is in development or provided fans with a release window, so we can't really count it as a proper delay.
It'll be interesting to see the reactions from fans. Sadly, the 20th anniversary of the franchise won't have a game to keep fans happy. Moving to a 2.5D perspective while making it a prequel could also be a point of contention, as many were hoping the IP would go back to a more hack'n'slash gameplay rather than contuining with the current over-the-shoulder.
In any case, at least there's reassurance for God of War fans that's something is being cooked up at Santa Monica.
