- Quick Answer: Combo Devils is a hybrid platform fighter featuring traditional mechanics and a 4-player roguelite mode; its Kickstarter is live now to fund its initial release.
Innovation in fighting games doesn't get much better than what the Combo Devils developers are trying to do. It's a platform fighter at first glance, but one that adds traditional fighting game mechanics to the mix. Additionally, one of the key features includes a side-scrolling extraction roguelite mode that supports up to four players online.
If this all sounds very ambitious, the pedigree of the creators behind the team creating the project definitely backs their ambitions, with former Supergiant, Riot, Blizzard, and Epic Games developers as part of the team. Game Director Cordell Felix also worked on the beloved Project M Smash Brawl mod, a unique gameplay mod that made Brawl play more like Smash Melee.
The latest 7-minute breakdown of the fighter really makes it clear this is a complete departure from what we're used to in the platform fighter genre. It looks like another Smash or Rivals of Aether clone, but once you start seeing the core mechanics being showcased, you can tell there's something special about Combo Devils. Combos work like traditional fighters, with things such as Gatlin combos, target combos, special cancels, motion input supers, parries, launchers, air dashes, all available as tools to craft some really hype sequences.
Beyond that, it is still a platform fighter, so movement has tools like wavedashing, airdodges, ledge dashes, as well as wall sliding and jumping. To top it all off, the shield mechanic allows you to move it in any direction (similar to the shrinking Smash shield bubble mechanic), but you can also do special reversals out of it.
As mentioned, the Combo Devils developers also want to deliver an incredible single-player/co-op experience, inspired by the likes of the Subspace Emissary mode in Smash Brawl or other roguelikes like Risk of Rain and Hades. Not to be treated as a "bonus" mode, but a core part of the entire package.
If you've played roguelites, you'll be familiar with the gist of the gameplay loop: drop into a location, clear a few rooms that can range from normal encounters to a wide variety of very fun-looking minigames, all while you craft unique builds by getting powerful boons as you make your way to that area's boss. A big incentive is that Combo Devil's roguelite mode will give players a glimpse into the game's world and characters' backstories if you're into that sort of aspect of fighting games.
While I haven't had the chance to try out the game for myself, the glimpses I've seen from previous showcases at events like Evo and this latest breakdown have me very excited for it.
The project's Kickstarter just launched, requiring a minimum of $120k to be fully funded. This will allow the game to launch with five playable characters, extra modes, and functional online play (with rollback netcode). Via stretch goals, things such as items, more characters, arcade and training mode, and even mod support can be added to the game.
