Borderlands 4 will come out next month, and fans can’t wait to see how this new entry changes up its looter shooter roots. We’ve already talked about the brand-new traversal mechanics players can use, which makes moving around more fun, so that’s already some extra incentive.
It looks like Gearbox Software won’t stop there, as the company has said this entry will go all-in on RPG mechanics. Technically, this series has always been an RPG, but this specific entry will go even harder than before. This game was inspired by Baldur’s Gate 3 and Path of Exile, which can only mean good things for RPG fans.
Nick Thurston, the game’s character designer, spoke with Polygon about Borderlands 4 and how RPG-inspired this looter shooter is going to be. Thurston spoke about the game’s new skill tree and how it will force players to make choices that will affect how their chosen Vault Hunter will play. Using Amon as an example, he said this Vault Hunter has 87 passive buffs, while the other characters have at least 80, showing just how RPG-centric this entry will be.
“The Augment and the Capstone system that we have forces you to make a choice, and all of them drastically change the ability that each player has,” Thurston says. “That alone would create more build diversity than we’ve ever had. But then we also have more passives than all the previous Borderlands combined. I think Amon alone has 87 passives, and most Vault Hunters have about 80.”
Previous Borderlands games were already RPGs, but they were more about upping your numbers than anything meaty or deep. Sure, those games had passive buffs and various skills to learn, but they mostly felt like first-person shooters with numbers coming out. That’s not to say these games are bad, but we can see how Borderlands 4 can stand out with its deeper features.
